About Us
The Department of Living Science was established in 1993. In alignment with the university’s medium- and long-term development goals, the department has been deeply rooted in distance education, providing lifelong learning opportunities for adult learners. The primary mission of the department is to enhance the quality of life for the general public. Taking into account institutional resources and future societal development trends, the department defines its position as:
“An educational unit dedicated to enhancing public knowledge for improving quality of life, and to cultivating professionals in family management as well as leisure planning and implementation.”
The department emphasizes the provision of professional knowledge and the cultivation of students’ potential for advanced academic development. Accordingly, four major educational objectives have been established:
- To enhance knowledge and competencies in healthy lifestyle management
- To cultivate ethical awareness and a spirit of care
- To develop professionals in family studies with both theoretical and practical expertise
- To develop professionals in leisure studies with both theoretical and practical expertise
In terms of curriculum design in the family domain, the department adopts a comprehensive approach that spans from individual physical and mental well-being to family relationships and management, and further extends to the interconnections among family, community, and the broader environment. In addition, a life-course perspective is incorporated into the curriculum, covering issues across different life stages, including childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and older age.
For the leisure domain, curriculum planning addresses multiple dimensions, including the individual (with attention to gender), family, and environmental contexts.
Furthermore, the department places strong emphasis on students’ professional development by incorporating courses aligned with certification requirements and career advancement. This ensures that graduates are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies in family education and leisure-related professions, in accordance with the department’s educational objectives.
